Seaweed Baths are one of the most famous tourist attractions in Ireland, especially on the west coast.

The 1900 was the century of the innovative inventions, but people were also interested in looking after their health.

The buildings hosting the huge Victorian Seaweed Bath tubs (like the one in Enniscrone, County Sligo and Ballybunion, County Kerry), have a system in place to pump Seawater to boiling tanks, so that people can benefit from the Thalassotherapy effect at comfortable warm temperature.

Those traditional old Spa resorts were built in the early 20th Century, when it was easy to obtain a licence to pipe water from the sea. Modern establishments would not be able to use seawater, but they do use the abundant natural resource of seaweed Fucus serratus, by cutting it fresh as needed.

Thalassotherapy is the Greek word meaning ‘Cure with Sea Water’. An extensive study was carried out by Hippocrates, Greek physician, considered the father of medicine who lived an amazingly long life (born 460 B.C died 370 B.C) using only natural remedies, seawater and seaweed.
